Newcastle defender Steven Taylor is set to undergo a scan on an Achilles injury sustained against Chelsea amid fears his season could be over.
The centre-back has been an integral part of his club's excellent start to the campaign, but he limped off during the closing stages of Saturday afternoon's 3-0 Premier League loss.
Taylor is now scheduled for further assessment which will reveal the extent of the injury and, while the most optimistic view is he could return within six weeks, it is understood he could be sidelined for months.
Newcastle captain Fabricio Coloccini is also an injury concern after leaving the pitch before half-time against Chelsea with a thigh strain.
Problem
The Argentine is unlikely to play in next weekend's trip to Norwich, with manager Alan Pardew having already indicated his replacement against Chelsea, James Perch, will start at Carrow Road.
Newcastle's squad is looking increasingly thin, as injury and suspension take their toll, and their only other specialist central defender, Mike Williamson, remains on the casualty list.
If Taylor's problem does prove serious, Pardew will hope for even more support from owner Mike Ashley than he had initially requested when the transfer window opens in January.
Pardew had said regarding the injuries in his post-Chelsea interview with
Sky Sports: "We'll have to wait and see.
"Coloccini has got a thigh strain, so maybe next week or the week after we might be struggling. Steven looks a little more serious."
