Iain Hume could return from his injury lay-off when Preston host Chesterfield in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy next week.
Phil Brown's side are not in action this weekend due to their first-round FA Cup exit at the hands of Southend.
Hume, struggling with a knee injury, has scored six goals this season, but hobbled out of October's 3-1 defeat to Huddersfield - the fourth game in what proved to be a a run of nine winless League One matches.
Preston stopped the rot with a 1-0 victory over Hartlepool on Tuesday and, in a further boost, the striker has a chance of returning for the northern area semi-final.
"He's 50/50 for next Tuesday at this stage," Brown told the Lancashire Evening Post.
"When Iain comes back into the team it will be for the right reasons, in that he's fully fit and is capable of doing the things we know he can do."
