Newcastle manager Alan Pardew has reiterated his hope that Danny Simpson will sign a new deal as soon as possible after contract talks with the defender stalled.
The Magpies have been locked in negotiations with the right-back over extending his contract but the 24-year-old is yet to commit.
Pardew is keen to keep hold of Simpson, who has kept summer signing Davide Santon out of the first team this season.
The manager said: "Danny is a player who has broken into a Premier League team here at Newcastle, which is a big club, and he has done very well.
"We want him to secure his future here. Contract negotiations are ongoing, but my personal preference is for him to sign quickly because he has got a lot of competition in that area."
