Sunderland defender hoping to resurrect career

Forgotten man Matthew Kilgallon is targeting a Championship loan move to revive his Sunderland career. The 27-year-old centre-half, a £1.75million signing from Sheffield United, has failed to make a single appearance for the Black Cats in the last 18 months. But the former Leeds United trainee is aiming to secure a temporary switch this week and get some much-needed action under his belt. He hopes regular first-team football until January will help him force a way back into manager Steve Bruce's plans.

Difficult

"A few Championship clubs are looking at Matt, although I do not want to say who they are at this stage," said Kilgallon's agent Paul Masterton. "There is a good chance something will happen this week. "It has been a very difficult time for Matt because he is not playing at Sunderland and that does not look like changing for the time being. "He just wants to be back playing again, and a loan move would be the best option for him at the moment. "He has not given up on Sunderland but he does need to play games somewhere." Kilgallon saw a loan switch to Championship outfit Middlesbrough curtailed by injury last year, before he linked up with Doncaster Rovers in another short-term deal in January.
