Villarreal president Fernando Roig has revealed that Atletico Madrid have rebuffed advances to sign Adrian.
The Yellow Submarine are keen to add a new striker to their ranks after Giuseppe Rossi was ruled out for six months.
They made enquiries about Los Colchoneros' forward, but Roig revealed Atletico snubbed their interest.
"Adrian is a player that did interest us, but they said no," Roig was quoted as saying by AS.
"After found out the extent of Rossi's injury we made contact with Atletico to make an offer."
Rossi is set to miss the majority of the current campaign after suffering knee ligament damage in the reverse against Real Madrid last week.
With a new goalscorer required Villarreal turned their attention to Adrian but he only joined Atletico in the summer from Deportivo and the interest was quickly rebuffed.
There was some good news for the Valenciana club as Joselu put pen to paper on a new deal that will keep him at the club until at least 2015.
The 20 year old, who full name is Jose Luis Moreno, made his Champions League debut for the club against Manchester City having risen through the youth ranks.
