Wigan Athletic manager Roberto Martinez was pleased with the performance of midfielder Ben Watson against Newcastle United despite their defeat.
The Latics went down 1-0 at St James' Park in their Premier League game on Saturday and are now at the foot of the table with five points from nine matches.
Martinez, though, was happy with what the display of 25-year-old Watson and underlined his technical abilities.
"Ben has a real desire to achieve things and he is a different kind of British player," he said.
"Technically he is as good as anyone and players like that are very rare.
"Ben, like the rest of the squad, needs to play a massive role if we are going to achieve our aim."
