Andre Villas-Boas has refused to provide Salomon Kalou with guaranteed assurances he will gain more first-team opportunities at Chelsea.

The Ivory Coast international has said he wants to know he will feature on a more regular basis before he signs a new contract to replace his present deal, which expires next summer.

Kalou staked a claim for a recall in Sunday's derby against QPR after coming off the bench and scoring in the UEFA Champions League thrashing of Genk.

But Villas-Boas did not take up the opportunity to directly reassure the forward ahead of the weekend, as the Chelsea boss diplomatically said: "Everyone wants more playing time.

"Everyone thinks they fall short because we have 26 players and we can only pick 11.

"He can play a part for this team, as he did against Genk, and he just has to keep going and keep working."
