Nemanja Vidic has travelled with the Manchester United squad for Tuesday's UEFA Champions League game against Otelul Galati but Rio Ferdinand is staying behind.
Ferdinand was rested for United's trip to Benfica last month and it would appear Sir Alex Ferguson is saving him for the Premier League clash with Manchester City on Sunday.
The England international has not been a regular in the side this season but produced an impressive performance in the 1-1 draw at Liverpool over the weekend.
Captain Vidic missed the Anfield encounter as Ferguson decided not to take any risks with a recent calf problem, but is in contention to come back into the side in Romania.
Dimitar Berbatov, who also missed the Anfield contest, is included in the squad while Phil Jones has recovered from a knock he picked up on Saturday.
Tom Cleverley (foot) and Rafael (shoulder) remain on the sidelines, although they are nearing a return to full fitness.
United fly out to Bucharest knowing there is still a lot of work to do to secure qualification for the last 16 of the Champions League, having only picked up two points from their opening two Group C games.
Otelul have yet to get off the mark in their debut season in the competition, with Basel and Benfica currently joint leaders on four points.
