Middlesbrough boss Tony Mowbray is the Championship Manager of the Month for September.
Boro are second in the table and have maintained their unbeaten start to the season.
They recorded two wins and two draws in September, which was enough for Mowbray to get the award.
Former Charlton Athletic boss Alan Curbishley chairs the judging panel and he said: "Middlesbrough have continued their great start to this season as Mowbray's men remain unbeaten in the npower Championship.
Hard to beat
"With Boro not conceding a single goal this month I am sure they will prove hard to beat this campaign."
Bates joined his manager in getting the monthly prize after he helped the club claim four clean sheets in September.
Mowbray said: "Matthew has played an integral role as captain and central defender in a team that has kept four clean sheets during September.
"Such an achievement is always a collective effort, of course, but Matthew has led by example and richly deserves this honour."
