Roma are still hoping to reach an agreement with Daniele De Rossi regarding a new deal, with extension discussions ongoing.
The Italy international has been locked in talks for some time, with his current contract set to expire at the end of the season.
With his future far from clear, a number of clubs have been closely monitoring the midfielder's situation.
Manchester City made their interest known over the summer and Roberto Mancini would be keen to make a move if Roma fail to agree fresh terms.
The Serie A outfit are not about to give up in their efforts, though, and club administrator Claudio Fenucci is hoping a compromise can be reached.
"It's not an easy negotiation," he told Radio Rai.
"It's an important deal and we have been discussing it over the summer.
"We have been able to define certain issues but, regarding the fixed amount (wages), there is still some distance.
"In any case, the will is there to reduce that difference in order to reach an agreement.
"Time is needed. Daniele is a great player, an excellent professional and this has been recognised.
"The club has an economic project. It has a revenue that is half of what the other three big (Serie A) clubs have and it has to work towards increasing the income."
