Hearts striker Kevin Kyle fears his career is under threat following a setback in his recovery from hip surgery, but he is trying to remain patient.
The 30-year-old, who has not played since January, inflamed his hip while doing a stretching exercise during his rehabilitation last month.
Kyle had been hoping to return to the first team in August but he now has no idea when, or even if, he will be back playing.
"It is a career-threatening injury I've had and, yes, my career is threatened," he told the Scottish Daily Mail.
"I had a setback four or five weeks ago and right at this moment I have no idea when I will be back.
"It is a case of waiting for it to settle down before I start to try it all again. I have had an injection with a lubricant to put into the joint and it has helped."
The former Sunderland, Coventry and Kilmarnock player added: "The surgeons have told me I should get back and that I need to be patient.
"But if it all ends next month or next week, then I will feel I've played for some good clubs, won caps and had exciting moments."
