Skysports.com understands Torquay have opened contract talks with Eunan O'Kane in a bid to secure his long-term future.
The 21-year-old has established himself as a key player at Plainmoor since arriving from Irish side Coleraine in January 2010.
O'Kane was rewarded for his progress with a new deal that summer and his current contract expires at the end of the season.
The news has alerted a number of clubs to O'Kane's potential availability on a free transfer next summer.
Torquay are determined to keep hold of the former Everton trainee and are pulling out all the stops as they try to agree a new deal with O'Kane.
