Schalke defender Benedikt Howedes is urging his own fans not to boo goalkeeper Manuel Neuer when he returns to the Veltins-Arena this weekend.
Neuer left Schalke to join Bayern Munich in the summer in a record transfer deal for a goalkeeper between German clubs.
The Germany international has made an impressive start to life at the Allianz Arena, keeping five clean sheets in six competitive games so far.
The 25 year old started his career with Schalke and became a regular in the first team in the 2006/07 season.
He helped them win the German Cup and reach the UEFA Champions League semi-finals last season, where they lost to Manchester United.
Bayern top the Bundesliga after five games with four wins while Schalke have won three games and are sixth in the table.
Howedes told kicker-Sportmagazin: "I am hoping the people will not give Manuel Neuer a hard fight when he is playing on Sunday.
"He does not deserve to be met with hostility.
"He has always been loyal and he always performed greatly when he was under contract with us.
"I expect he will nevertheless have to accept being booed by the crowd."
