Skysports.com understands Southampton are pushing to sign Burnley striker Jay Rodriguez in a beat-the-deadline move.
The Saints have been trailing the England Under 21 international all summer and saw a bid rejected for his services earlier this month.
Southampton boss Nigel Adkins is determined to bring in a new striker before the transfer window slams shut and Rodriguez is thought to be his top target.
It is believed Southampton have now come back with a new offer for Rodriguez as they look to tempt Burnley into selling their prize asset.
Rodriguez, who has come through the ranks at Burnley, has established himself as one of the best young forwards in the country after impressing in the last couple of seasons.
Burnley would be reluctant to lose Rodriguez, but they could find it hard to reject a sizeable offer from Southampton.
