Croatian attacking midfielder Ivo Ilicevic is on the brink of joining Hamburg from Kaiserslautern, according to general manager Stefan Kuntz.
Reports in Germany suggest the two clubs have agreed a £3.5million fee for the 24-year-old, whose Kaiserslautern contract expires next summer.
Hamburg are on the hunt for a replacement for Dutch international winger Eljero Elia, who left the Imtech Arena for Juventus earlier on deadline day.
Kaiserslautern chief Kuntz told BILD: "Ivo Ilicevic wanted a move to Bayern Munich in January. Back then we refused to allow him a transfer.
"Since then, Ivo is keen to leave our club. Now he is free to have the requested transfer."
He added: "We could also still make a transfer, but we need to sort this out. There's no use rushing."
Ilicevic is suspended for the next four Bundesliga matches after receiving a red card at home to Bayern Munich on Saturday.
