Liverpool have announced England midfielder Joe Cole has joined Lille on a season-long loan.
Aston Villa had been linked with a late move to hijack the deal, but Lille have now tied up their swoop for the England international.
Cole's future at Anfield has been the subject of speculation all summer with the former Chelsea man well down the pecking order in Kenny Dalglish's plans.
The 29-year-old has failed to establish himself at Liverpool since arriving on a free transfer last summer.
A number of clubs including Tottenham and Queens Park Rangers were credited with an interest in Cole, but Lille have managed to secure his services.
Lille can offer Champions League football this season and it is believed they will allow him to commute from England to France for training.
A statement on Liverpool's official website read: "Liverpool announced today it had finalised a deal with Lille OSC for the loan transfer of Joe Cole.
"The 29-year old will now join the French champions for the remainder of the current campaign."
