Robert Green has had to pull out of the England squad due to injury and Frank Fielding has been called up in his place.
Green had been named as one of three goalkeepers alongside regular No.1 Joe Hart and Fulham's David Stockdale, who is currently out on loan at Ipswich.
But the West Ham player has now withdrawn from Fabio Capello's squad ahead of the Euro 2012 qualifiers against Bulgaria and Wales.
Green picked up the knock in the Hammers' 4-1 win over Nottingham Forest on Sunday.
Fielding of Derby has been drafted in as a replacement and will provide cover for Hart and Stockdale.
While 23-year-old Fielding has impressed in recent seasons and is regarded as a bright prospect for the future, he has never been capped at senior international level.
The fact that Fielding and Stockdale, as well as Green, all currently ply their trade in the Championship also highlights a lack of top-quality options between the posts for England.
Paul Robinson of Blackburn has retired from international football, West Brom's Ben Foster has also made himself unavailable and out-of-favour Scott Carson joined Turkish club Bursaspor over the summer.
Hart has established himself as Capello's first-choice keeper since last summer's World Cup, when Green lost his place following a mistake against USA and was replaced by veteran David James for the rest of the tournament.
