Inter Milan have announced Maicon will return to Brazil to undergo surgery on his injured knee.
Tests confirmed on Tuesday that the 30-year-old has damaged cartilage in his right knee.
The procedure will be carried out by Professor Jose Luis Runco, Brazil's team doctor.
Meanwhile, Samuel Eto'o looks likely to complete his move to Russian side Anzhi in the coming days.
Inter could lose their star striker just days before the start of the season, which they will begin at home to Leece on August 28th.
