Heerenveen winger Roy Beerens claims he turned down 'concrete interest' from Wigan and Nottingham Forest in favour of a move to AZ Alkmaar.
The 23-year-old is poised to join AZ on a four-year deal worth €1.6million after undergoing a medical on Monday, according to reports in the Dutch media.
Beerens, who arrived at the Abe Lenstra stadium from boyhood club PSV in 2007, claims he spurned English interest, as well as approaches from FC Twente and Standard Liege, in order to join AZ.
"There was concrete interest from Standard Liege, Wigan, Nottingham Forest and FC Twente, as cover for the possible departure of Bryan Ruiz," he told De Telegraaf.
"But AZ was my first choice from the beginning."
He added: "The team operates in the opposition's half and takes initiative. The transfer is a step up and the game suits me.
"You do not know how delighted I am."
