Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed midfielder Darren Fletcher will make his comeback in the reserves against Arsenal on Monday.
The 27-year-old missed United's pre-season tour of North America as he continued his recovery from a virus which hampered him at the end of last season.
Midfield is a position United are currently short in which is highlighted by the retirement of the mercurial Paul Scholes and their inability to sign Wesley Sneijder from Inter Milan.
But the return of the indefatigable Scotland international will no doubt give Ferguson a timely boost.
"He is back in training with us now and he is over the virus and looking terrific," Sir Alex told STV at a charity dinner in Dunfermline.
"We have pencilled in a game next Monday, I think, with the reserves. We'll give him a half which will hopefully start him off.
"He is looking very good at the moment."
