Carlisle have completed the signing of teenage defender James Tavernier on loan from Newcastle.
Tavernier, 19, who can play at either full-back or centre-half, will spend an initial month with the Cumbrians.
Manager Greg Abbott said: "James is a very good player who we have known about for a while. We need cover in that area and he's a strong defender who can also play football.
"We're really looking forward to working with him."
Abbott has moved following injury to right-back Frank Simek, who damaged his hip in the opening-day defeat to Notts county and is currently awaiting scan results.
Tavernier, who spent three months on loan at Gateshead last season, has made two senior appearances for Newcastle, making his debut in the Carling Cup against Peterborough in 2009.
