Chris Kirkland is being linked with a return to West Brom after manager Roy Hodgson confirmed that he wants to sign a back-up goalkeeper.
The Baggies have signed Ben Foster on loan from Birmingham and have allowed Boaz Myhill to move in the opposite direction.
Hodgson, though, has not finished his search for goalkeeping options and he would like to find a player capable of providing support and competition to Foster.
Kirkland is reported to be a target, with the former Liverpool man having slipped to third choice at Wigan, and West Brom's manager could consider a move.
Hodgson said in the Birmingham Post: "By allowing Boaz Myhill to go we are definitely in the market for a back-up keeper, which is a very important job.
"It's a role that is very underestimated.
"Someone who has to sit on the bench on Saturday but has an important job for us during the week, with our preparation and training.
"We are searching for someone suitable who will step into that role."
