Hoffenheim are hoping to pip Celtic to the signing of Kaizer Chiefs striker Knowledge Musona - despite the Scottish club making the higher bid.
The 21-year-old recorded 15 goals in 28 matches last term in the South African league, which has prompted Celtic to table a reported £2.2million offer.
But the Bundesliga outfit view Musona as the perfect replacement for their Ghana striker Prince Tagoe, who they hope to again send on loan.
Musona had a brief trial with Hoffenheim after which they tabled a bid of £1.3million for the forward.
Tagoe was sent out on loan to Partizan Belgrade for the final six months of the campaign, having scored just two goals in 19 Bundesliga games since joining the club in 2009.
Hoffenheim general manager Ernst Tanner confirmed the club are working on two fronts to conclude in and outgoing deals.
"It is very likely Prince Tagoe will leave us before the end of the transfer window," he told Deutsche Presseagentur.
"We are still in talks with Knowledge Musona and are attempting to find a solution.
"He is technically very good, quick, two-footed and integrated with the squad very well when he was on trial here.
"We know that Knowledge can sign more lucrative deals elsewhere, but Kaizer Chiefs are keen to conclude a deal with us in the hope we can cooperate on further deals in the future."
