Crystal Palace have informed free agent Anthony Gardner that they have offered him the best deal they can.
The former England international took in a productive loan spell at Selhurst Park last season, before reaching the end of his contract at Hull City.
He is now on the lookout for a new club and has spent the early part of the summer weighing up his options.
Palace were quick to put a contract to him, with Eagles boss Dougie Freedman keen to bring the centre-half back onto his books.
Gardner has yet to agree terms, though, and Palace have warned that they cannot afford to put more money on the table.
Freedman said: "There is still a chance with Anthony. It's purely the financial side of things that is holding that back.
"We have a strict wage cap and it doesn't matter who it is, we won't go over it.
"We've offered him what we'll go up to."
