Magpies boss Martin Allen is keen to bring in a new forward and he has targeted a move for Benson.
Benson scored 10 goals for the Addicks last season in his debut campaign after arriving from Dagenham & Redbridge.
Charlton are reluctant to lose Benson, but they have accepted County's offer for the 31-year-old.
Benson will now hold talks about a possible move to Meadow Lane as Allen sees him as a key addition to his plans for next season.
