Arsenal have confirmed that Brazilian midfielder Denilson has joined Sao Paulo on a season-long loan.

The 23-year-old revealed earlier this week he would be returning to his homeland, a move the club have now authorised.

The Brazilian expressed his 'sadness' at leaving Emirates Stadium for pastures new in search of first-team football, although he would continue to track the club's results from South America.

Denilson made his first-team debut in October 2006 in a League Cup match against West Bromwich Albion and has gone on to make 153 appearances for the Gunners in all competitions.

"The club can confirm that Denilson has joined Brazilian side Sao Paulo on loan for the 2011/12 season," read a statement on the club's official website.

"Everyone at Arsenal Football Club wishes Denilson the best of luck during his time in Brazil with Sao Paulo."
