Sky Sports sources understand Aston Villa are in talks to sign goalkeeper Shay Given from Manchester City.
The Republic of Ireland international has fallen behind Joe Hart in the Eastlands pecking order and is eager to secure first-team football.
Given is regarded as one of the finest goalkeepers in the Premier League after his exploits with Newcastle and then City, who he joined for £5.9million in January 2009.
But Hart's emergence as first choice for club and country has forced the experienced shot-stopper onto the bench in Roberto Mancini's side.
Now new Villa manager Alex McLeish is ready to offer him a route back to regular action with a move to the Midlands.
The Villa Park club are in the market for a new shot-stopper having seen Brad Friedel depart for Tottenham.
