Skysports.com understands that Bolton and Sunderland have joined the race to sign Barry Ferguson.

The Birmingham midfielder has been linked with a departure from St Andrews following Blues' relegation from the Premier League.

It is thought the Scotland international wants to move north to be nearer his family and Blackpool have expressed an interest in the 33-year-old, who has one year left on his contract.

But that has alerted Bolton and Sunderland, who would both be able to offer Ferguson the chance to stay in the Premier League.

Bolton boss Owen Coyle is looking to bolster his midfield and sees Ferguson as an attractive option.

Meanwhile, ambitious Sunderland have made a string of signings as they look to improve on last season's ninth-place finish, with Craig Gardner having already moved to Wearside from Birmingham this summer.
