League Two outfit Gillingham have seen a bid for Dover striker Adam Birchall knocked back.
The highly-rated 26-year-old scored 45 goals last season and is drawing plenty of admiring glances from the Football League ranks.
Gillingham are understood to have held a long-standing interest in his services and remain keen on bringing him on board.
Skysports.com reported on Monday that Birchall had
handed in a transfer request in an effort to force through a move.
Dover are reluctant to part with their star frontman, though, and are prepared to stand firm.
They do have a valuation in mind that could see their hand forced, but they have no intention of parting with Birchall for less than they feel he is worth.
Derisory
The ball is now back in Gillingham's court, while a number of other clubs are also understood to be ready to test Dover's resolve.
Dover chairman Jim Parmenter told his club's
official website: "I've told (Gillingham chairman) Paul Scally to stop wasting my time. The figure is not only derisory, but he wanted to make the payments in two instalments.
"To be frank, it barely covers a taxi ride from Dover to Gillingham. It's a joke bid and clearly a tactic to turn Adam's head.
"If Mr Scally, however, really wants to sign Adam then he should come back to me with a much bigger bid - and not two tiny instalments.
"This is nothing personal against Gillingham. We turned down a higher bid from a non-league side (Newport County) than the one they've come up with today."
