Skysports.com understands Portsmouth have targeted Burnley's Martin Paterson to replace David Nugent.
Pompey are on the look for striking reinforcements after Nugent left on a free transfer to join ambitious Leicester City.
Nugent was the club's leading scorer in the Championship with 13 goals from 44 appearances.
Fratton Park boss Steve Cotterill is keen to fill the void vacated by the one-cap England man and is lining up a move for Paterson.
Paterson made just 11 league appearances for the Clarets, but Cotterill believes he will recapture the former he showed at Scunthorpe.
