Peterborough United boss Darren Ferguson hopes to tie midfielder Tommy Rowe to a new deal at London Road in the next few days.
The former Stockport County ace has become an increasingly vital figure for Posh since Ferguson snapped him up in 2009.
And he scored the first goal in the League One play-off final victory over Huddersfield at Old Trafford in May.
Ferguson remains hopeful of concluding talks with the 22-year-old while the club are based at a pre-season training camp in Portugal.
"Tommy is someone I've always liked," said Ferguson. "I brought him to the club in the first place and he is a terrific team player. We really saw the best of him in the second half of last season.
"He is an athlete but also has plenty of ability. We spoke about the possibility of a new deal when I first came back but we agreed to wait and discuss it again at the end of the season.
"Myself and the chairman will more than likely sit down with Tommy while we are in Portugal to see how the land lies."
