Skysports.com understands that Southampton, Watford and Doncaster are all interested in Neil Mellor.

Sheffield Wednesday are also keen on the 28-year-old striker after the League One club took him on loan from Preston last season.

Mellor has a year left on his contract and, after returning to Deepdale, manager Phil Brown was hopeful he would lead North End's bid to bounce straight back up following relegation to League One.

But the interest from the Championship trio is expected to be more appealing for the former Liverpool trainee.

After failing to establish himself in the first team at Anfield, Mellor moved to Preston in 2006.

He has gone on to score 30 goals in 113 Championship appearances for North End but has not featured for them since April 2010.

He was transfer-listed by then boss Darren Ferguson before joining Wednesday on a season-long loan, scoring 13 goals in 33 league games last term.
