Brown hopeful of Mellor stay

Preston manager Phil Brown is optimistic that Neil Mellor will remain at Deepdale despite the striker being linked with a move to Hillsborough.

Sheffield Wednesday have been heavily linked with a permanent move for the 28-year-old after he spent last season on loan with The Owls. Mellor, who started his career with Liverpool, has not figured for Preston since April 2010 and was allowed to join the Owls last summer after being transfer-listed by previous North End boss Darren Ferguson. Yet Brown told BBC Radio Lancashire: "If you've got a player who's going to score you 20 to 25 goals in one season it's a good start for me. "I've spoken to him and Neil is very positive about playing for North End. "I spoke with Neil after the season finished and he believed there was a Championship club coming in for him - he wanted to play Championship football but now he's very positive about giving Preston a full season."
