St Etienne have taken Florent Sinama-Pongolle on a year-long loan from Portuguese giants Sporting Lisbon.
The agreement includes the option for the move to be made permanent next summer.
The former Liverpool and Atletico Madrid frontman will undergo a medical on Monday before finalising the move.
A new frontman had been a priority for St Etienne this summer following their 10th place finish in Ligue 1 last season.
Sinama-Pongolle returns to his homeland for the first time since 2003, when he left Le Havre to join Liverpool.
Things did not go entirely to plan for him at Anfield and he took in spells at Blackburn and Recreativo before moving to Madrid.
Sporting snapped him up in January 2010, but sent him on loan to Real Zaragoza last season.
He has now been loaned out once more and will be hoping to recapture his best form in the French top flight.
