Skysports.com understands that Portsmouth are closing in on a deal to secure Derby striker Luke Varney.
Pompey are looking for a replacement for David Nugent, who is out of contract and appears certain to leave Fratton Park.
Varney struggled to settle at Pride Park after arriving from Charlton on a permanent basis in 2009, but revitalised his career in a loan spell at Blackpool last season.
The 28-year-old scored five goals in 30 league games for the Seasiders as they were relegated on the final day of the season back to the Championship.
Varney's impact at Bloomfield Road has seen him become sought after by several clubs, with the player himself admitting he would relish a return to Blackpool.
However, it would seem Pompey boss Steve Cotterill is closing in on securing a deal for the former Crewe forward, who is surplus to requirements after the Rams signed Nathan Tyson from Nottingham Forest.
Blackpool boss Ian Holloway was thought to be keen on re-signing Varney, but has decided to opt against securing the player on a permanent basis.
