Skysports.com understands Yorkshire rivals Leeds United and Sheffield United could agree a swap deal involving Billy Paynter and Nick Montgomery.
Paynter came in for criticism from fans last season and has been linked with a move away from Elland Road since the end of the campaign.
But Leeds boss Simon Grayson said earlier in the summer that the forward, who scored just one goal in 23 appearances in 2010/11, remained a part of his plans.
Leeds, though, are in the process of reshaping their squad in a bid to challenge for promotion from the Championship.
Midfielder Montgomery could therefore provide a different dimension to Grayson's plans and may welcome the chance to return to the second division.
Sheffield United were relegated from the Championship last season and the 29-year-old, who signed a new three-year contract last summer, might be looking elsewhere.
