Bolton boss Owen Coyle has admitted he would consider selling defender Gary Cahill this summer.
Cahill is Coyle's prized asset after making vast improvement in the last couple of seasons, resulting in an England debut.
The 25-year-old centre-back, who joined Bolton in January 2008 after failing to establish himself at Aston Villa, has recently been linked with Arsenal and Manchester City.
And although Coyle is in no rush to get rid of Cahill, he accepts a big-money move would boost his own transfer coffers as he aims to bolster the Bolton squad ahead of the new season.
"There's a lot of ifs and buts and Gary Cahill is one of those," he told Sky Sports News.
"We have an outstanding player in Gary Cahill, a player I believe can play for any team in world football. I'd put my reputation on that.
"There's been various degrees of interest in Gary from the elite clubs, as we call them, but there's been nothing concrete yet. We'll have to see what the summer brings.
"He's not a player I want to lose, I've got to stress that, but equally we have to accept that sometimes if it's the right business deal for the football club and the player then it has to be done.
"That, in turn, would free up cash for myself to go and invest in some players to bring to the club.
"But as I've shown wherever I've been, we've always had to work under tight, financial restraints. That certainly hasn't done us any harm," Coyle added.
"But, equally, there comes a time as a manager when you want some help and finance might have to be made available.
"Time will tell but whatever I've got I'll make the best of, as we've always done."
Asked if it was right to say Cahill would be leaving, he replied: "Ultimately that wouldn't be my decision.
"I would love him to stay and I totally understand you asking the question. He's a fantastic player for the football club.
"I'm not out there saying I want Gary Cahill to go. All I'm saying is if he is going to go, it'd have to be the right business for the football club. That's very important."
Cahill made a £5million move from Villa and has another year left on his contract at the Reebok Stadium.
