Ally McCoist has confirmed he is lining up a Rangers return for Carlos Cuellar.
The new Gers boss admits he remains a big admirer of the Spanish defender, who earned a £7.8million move to Aston Villa after a successful first spell with the club.
In his sole season at Ibrox (2007/08), Cuellar made a mammoth 65 appearances, helping the Gers win the league title, the Scottish League Cup and also reach the Uefa Cup final.
The 29-year-old has since made 108 appearances in three seasons with Villa but may be made available when they appoint Gerard Houllier's successor as manager.
McCoist has just returned from a scouting trip to Argentina and intends to enquire about Cuellar once Villa have named their new boss.
"I don't like talking about other people's players but I would be lying if I said I wasn't interested in a player of Carlos' quality," told the Daily Record.
"I'm back in the country now so it's a matter of the clubs making contact and taking it from there.
"The managerial situation at Villa complicates the issue but as soon as they have made an appointment I'll be in touch to ask about Carlos' availability.
"It will be up to Villa's new boss to decide if he's willing to do business or not."
