Fulham's Philippe Senderos admits he was shocked at Mark Hughes' departure after a successful season at Craven Cottage.
The 26-year-old defender is uncertain as to why Hughes decided to quit the club on Thursday after guiding them to eighth in his first season in charge.
And the Switzerland international is aware that Fulham need a replacement as quickly as possible, with their Europa League qualifier less than four weeks away and the squad set to return for pre-season training on 23rd June.
Senderos, who joined the Cottagers in 2010, said: "I didn't see it coming, no-one did.
"It's sad for everyone because we have had a good campaign and we were hoping to build on that next season but we shall see what happens.
"It's something that happens in football. The sooner Fulham are able to get a manager, the better."
Senderos - who only played three games under Hughes after rupturing his Achilles tendon - is now back to full fitness and likely to play in Switzerland's Euro 2012 qualifier against England at Wembley on Saturday.
Meanwhile, Martin Jol, Steve McClaren and Martin O'Neill are the bookmakers' favourites to fill Hughes' position.
The former Manchester City manager stepped down amid speculation he would become the new manager of Aston Villa - following the departure of Gerard Houllier - but later revealed his decision was not based on any outside party.
