Dundee United have confirmed the signing of midfielder John Rankin on a two-year contract from SPL rivals Hibernian.

Rankin made over 100 appearances for Hibs after his 2008 arrival from Inverness Caledonian Thistle, but had not featured since February.

Hibs confirmed last month that the 27-year-old would be allowed to leave and he has now secured a move to Tannadice.

"John is a player I have long admired and someone I believe can come in and add quality to the midfield area of our squad," United boss Peter Houston told the club's official website.

"He will add experience to the team as he not only received a good learning base in his four years at Manchester United but also has five years' experience of playing in the SPL with Inverness and Hibernian.

"This signing should show the United fans that we intend to be competing up the top of the SPL next season.

"John's style of football and his industrious nature will quickly see him become a fans' favourite at Tannadice."
