Jose Enrique believes wrapping up a top-10 finish this season would put down solid foundations at Newcastle.
The Magpies are on course to hit that target, with just a solitary point currently separating them from Fulham in 10th.
They have two games remaining in which to haul themselves into the top half, with a trip to Chelsea on Sunday followed by a home date with West Brom.
Spanish full-back Enrique believes Newcastle can pick up enough points from those games to improve their league placing, standing them in good stead for the future.
"To finish in the top 10 is important this season," he told the Evening Chronicle.
"We'll see what happens next year and which players come to us.
"We have a great squad here though, and we have been very unlucky with injuries.
"Next season we will hopefully get new players and try to build on a top-10 finish."
Newcastle also have the added incentive this season of finishing above Sunderland, with the North East neighbours locked together on 44 points.
"It would be very nice for us to finish ahead of Sunderland," added Enrique.
"I remember they were happy to see us go down, but now we are in the Premier League and we have been better than them so far - it's important we keep going."
