Chris Smalling believes it is unlikely Manchester United will let their title bid slip against Chelsea after sitting in pole position for so long.

United held a 15-point lead over the Blues earlier this season, but the reigning champions have whittled that advantage down to just three ahead of Sunday's showdown at Old Trafford.

Carlo Ancelotti's men will leapfrog the Red Devils into the top spot for the first time since November if they clinch three points this weekend.

But 21-year-old defender Smalling remains bullish over United's chances of retaining their lead and going on to lift a record 19th league trophy.

"Fair play to Chelsea," said Smalling. "They were a long way behind not that long ago and have caught up.

"But we have been top for so long, I can't see us letting it slip away now.

"The title is still in our hands and the fact we can put it to bed by beating Chelsea at Old Trafford sets up what is going to be massive occasion."

Smalling believes United have every reason to feel confident against Chelsea having dropped just two points, to West Brom in October, on home soil all season.

"Our confidence at home goes up another level," he added. "We have made Old Trafford a real fortress so, hopefully, we can put the whole thing to bed."

England Under 21 international Smalling has come on leaps and bounds at Old Trafford this season, and the youngster hopes he can crown his individual success with silverware.

"To get this experience so early in my career is immense," said Smalling.

"Hopefully, I will be able to sit down in about three weeks' time, having won two massive trophies and look back on it all, knowing I still have a major tournament with the England Under 21s to come.

"It has been a season to savour without a doubt and I am enjoying every minute."
