Preston North End manager Phil Brown has suggested he is keen to have Neil Mellor in his plans for next season.
Mellor has spent the current campaign on loan at Sheffield Wednesday and the striker has scored 20 goals in all competitions.
He has a further 12 months to run on his Preston contract, but recently expressed a desire to sign a permanent deal at Hillsborough.
However, following the Lilywhites' relegation from the Championship, Brown has confirmed he has spoken to Mellor about his future at Deepdale.
"I've been in discussions with Neil, I'm not breaking any rules by contacting him because he is still our player," said Brown in the Lancashire Evening Post.
"He has his opinions about the club, his situation and his career.
"I have to put a case forward to him as manager of Preston North End."
