Bongani Khumalo has undergone surgery on a foot injury to bring an end to his loan spell with Preston.
The 24-year-old Tottenham defender sustained the problem during North End's 4-0 defeat to Millwall on Saturday.
He will now aim to return to fitness in time for South Africa's crucial African Nations Cup qualifier with Egypt in June.
"He'll be fine - it may take a bit of time to get back to full fitness after an operation but it's not too serious," Khumalo's agent Glyn Binkin said.
"He definitely won't play again this season but the experience of playing at Preston has been great for his game."
