Espanyol are reported to have made contact with Aston Villa over the availability of Carlos Cuellar.
The 29-year-old has a year remaining on his current deal at Villa Park, but it remains to be seen whether he is part of Gerard Houllier's long-term plans.
Cuellar, who can play full-back or centre-half, has featured sparingly in recent times and European chasing Espanyol are keen to bring him back to his homeland.
Cuellar, who made his name with Osasuna and Numancia, moved to Britain in 2007 when he joined Rangers.
An impressive campaign at Ibrox saw Villa pay nearly £8million for his services in 2008.
He has since made nearly 100 appearances for the club, but he could be tempted by a return to Spain.
Espanyol are also believed to be keeping tabs on Cesar Navas at Rubin Kazan and Pape Diakhate of Dynamo Kiev - but Cuellar is reported to be their principal summer target for their defence.
