Aston Villa have opened contract talks with Brad Friedel, skysports.com can confirm.
The former USA international is continuing to perform at the highest level and produced a man-of-the-match display in the weekend draw at Everton.
The 39-year-old is out-of-contract at the end of the season, and as we revealed, a host of clubs are tracking him.
But Villa are not about to let him go without a fight and have now opted to open talks.
Friedel, who has been quick to rubbish claims that there is a player mutiny at Villa Park, could now be ready to sign on.
"We are in talks over a new contract, Brad is very happy at Villa," his agent Tony McGill confirmed to skysports.com.
"If Brad was not happy, he would not be talking over a new contract.
"I have spoken with chief executive Paul Faulkner and talks are going very well indeed."
