Athletic Bilbao left-back Koikili Lertxundi admits he has yet to agree a new deal with the La Liga club with Celtic and Wigan Athletic said to be waiting in the wings to snap up the player on a free transfer in the summer.
Koikili, 30, is out of contract at the end of June and Bilbao are desperately trying to tie up a deal for the defender who has been a long-term target for Scottish giants Celtic.
Wigan boss Roberto Martinez is also believed to be a fan and is considering making a bid.
"It is the same story as before. We are working towards reaching an agreement (on a contract)," Koikili told Radio Popular.
"I hope it will be sooner rather than later but there is time to wait and there are various factors in play."
Koikili, who has been at the club since 2007, indicated that the future of highly-rated coach Joaquin Caparros could have a big impact on his contract talks.
Caparros has been strongly linked with Sevilla in the Spanish media after guiding Bilbao into the top six this season as they challenge for a Europa League place.
"The issue (of Caparros staying or leaving) has come up in the dressing room and what happens with the coach is important," said Koikili. "It matters to the players whether or not he stays."
