Hearts expect stiff competition in the race to win Kilmarnock midfielder Mehdi Taouil's signature this summer.
The Tynecastle are the first club to declare their interest in the Morocco international after manager Jim Jefferies revealed his liking.
Taouil is out of contract at the end of the season after four years at Rugby Park and Hearts see the 27-year-old as an ideal addition to their squad.
"There is competition for Mehdi Taouil and it's not a certainty," Tynecastle assistant boss Billy Brown said.
"Mehdi is a really good wee player and he's a good type of person, the type we'd like to bring into a football club.
"We haven't really got a midfield player like him who can hold onto the ball and create wee situations and maybe open defences up that are tight.
"He's got good experience in the Scottish game and he's a good age for us, so that's why we're trying to bring him here."
