The two clubs are fighting very different Championship battles, with Forest very much involved in the promotion chase while Boro are still embroiled in the relegation scrap.

Boro lost goalkeeper Jason Steele to injury at the weekend meaning, with Danny Coyne still sidelined, they would have had to pitch in untried 18-year-old Connor Ripley.

However, the club have now landed Smith, who has lost his Forest place to Lee Camp, and he will make his debut against Derby County on Tuesday at The Riverside.

"Smith has plenty of experience at this level and he has played in the Premier League too," said Boro manager Tony Mowbray.

"We clearly needed a goalkeeper and he brings us experience and a steady pair of hands."

In return, Forest have landed Boyd from Boro to help bolster their attacking options.

Boyd has failed to make the expected impact in the North East following his move from Rangers in the summer.

The Scotland international has also seemingly failed to impress Tony Mowbray since he took charge as he has been limited to substitute appearances.

Now Boyd will look to help Forest's push for promotion during the latter part of the season.

"It's a good deal for the club and it's a good deal for the player, who will hopefully get some game time and build his confidence back up," Mowbray said of Boyd.
