The midfielder was set to see his current deal expire in the summer, casting doubts over his future.

He has, however, ended any uncertainty by committing himself to the club for another four years.

The France international is delighted to have extended his stay at Stade Gerland, having first linked up with Lyon in 2006.

"Everyone's been behind me after the difficult times I've been through," said Toulalan, who delayed talks earlier in the season after suffering a dip in form.

Ambition

"I feel very good in this city and it's going very well with the team, which is the best in France even if currently we have no titles. It's one of my goals to win more of them.

"In 2015 I will be 32 years old. I had the choice: either I extended and spend my career at Lyon or I leave. I chose to stay at Lyon and finish my career with the club."

Toulalan was part of the France squad that flopped badly at last summer's World Cup, with in-fighting damaging their international image.

He was handed a three-match ban for the part he played in a now infamous player strike in South Africa, but the 27-year-old insists he hopes to turn out for his country again now that suspension has been served.

He added: "As to what I've been through, my goal is to string together some performances for Lyon to maybe, I hope, be picked for the France team."
